Mahmut Çerkez Ergören

Dr. Ergören was graduated from department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Halic University in 2005. He was awarded PhD in human genetics at the Department of Genetics, University of Leicester in 2013 under the supervision of the pioneer of DNA fingerprinting Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys. Since 2013, he has been working as a full-time lecturer at Near East University, Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Ergören was selected as a National Representative of Cyprus for the European Society of Embryology and Human Reproduction between 2014-2017. Since 2016, he has been the responsible supervisor of Molecular Medicine Laboratory for the Experimental Health Sciences Research Centre (DESAM). Additionally, Dr. Ergören is a deputy coordinator for Faculty of Medicine Phase III and deputy coordinator for Continuous Medical Education. Also, he is the coordinator for molecular medicine postgraduate taught and research programs for Health Sciences Institute. In 2017, Dr. Ergören has been awarded Prof. Mariapia Viola-Magni best oral presentation award at the European Biotechnology Congress. He published 15 research articles at valuable peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as 30 prooceding papers at prestigious conferences and one book chapter. Very recently, he is selected as a representative of Near East University as well as North Cyprus, to the National Genome Consorsitium in Turkey.

His research interests involve understanding the fundamental processes that generate DNA diversity and thus contribute to disease and drive evolution. As a researcher, he examines the phenotypic consequences of human genetic diversity particularly, the relationship of this variation with susceptibility to genetic and more importantly rare disorders. Developing the techniques such as CRISPR/cAS9genome editing to able to use it especially in personalized medicine and patients’ treatment also added and brought this entire research pathway to his attention.
